Okay this theory is predicated on several facts, those being:
1) In the 5th edition fluff, the servants maintaining the Golden Throne have admitted its broken and unable to be repaired. Its no longer a matter of IF the Throne fails, but WHEN.
2) Abaddon has launched crusade after crusade, each time getting a little closer to his objective.
3) The last published date in 5th edition is 999.M41 (AD 40999.) The next date would be 000.M42 (AD 41000,) which is no longer in the 41st Millinium. New Millinium and all that jazz.
4) Cypher (remember him?) is trying to get to the Golden Throne to unplug the Emperor, who he thinks will heal and be restored to glory.
5) Leman Russ went away, vowing to return during the "Wolftime,' the Fenrisian version of Ragnarok.
6) After 10 years, the Space Wolves are getting an entirely new Codex.
7) We now have in-depth rules for Urban Warfare, Massive Planetary Assault (planetstrike,) and Titanic Battles meant to represent the most epic clashes of all time (Apocalypse.)
8) Its been almost 5 years since the last major global online campaign.
THE THEORY:
The Year is 000M42, which shall be known as the Year of Judgement. Abaddon, using pacts he won from the major Daemons of Chaos, has opened a major rift in the Sol System, a mere void-journey from Terra, and has begun what will be his final assault. The first stop on his campaign is Titan, for without the Ordo Malleus and their Grey Knights the Emperor will only have the Custodes, the PDF, and the largly inexperienced Battlefleet Solar ('cuz when was the last major attack in the Segmentum Solar?) to oppose his mighty Black Crusade.
After the moon of Titan is overrun and the temple desecrated, Abaddon seems to move on Mars to bolster the Crusade's strength. The Mechanus prepares for battle in earnest, and in their great psychic upheval The Dragon awakens, bringing about the activation of the Necrons who have slept in Mars all these years. As Mars turns inward to fight the Necrons, Abaddon resumes course, his true objective for Mars now accomplished. The Cult Mechanus will be too destracted to bring the Titan Legions online for the fight now.
Though Marneus Calgar and all of the Chapter Masters rush at best speed to Terra, and as if the winds of destiny are driving them most of them will arrive in time. Marneus, Dante, Logan, and Ezekiel deffinately make it to the fighton time. Nothing will stop them.
Reinforced by the largest gathering of the Space Marine Fleets in history, Battlefleet Solar manages to put together a defense line at the Asteroid Field which buys Marneus and Ezekiel a chance to prepare Terra for assault while Dante and Logan are sent to engage Abaddon directly in the field, something both Chapters are equally fine with.
Meanwhile, Cypher, long-forgotten by all save the Dark Angels, infiltrates the Imperial Palace and while doggedly persued by the Adeptus Custodes manages to gain access to the Throneroom. Check.
Back at the Asteroid Field, the battle is hard-fought and many great battles take place, but in an apocalyptic conflict Abaddon himself strikes down Logan and mortally wounds Dante, leaving them to die. Unable to stand and barely clinging to life, Logan tells Dante to feed from him, regain his strength, and use it to protect the Emperor for the both of them. Drinking Logan's Blood forces Dante into the Black Rage, but clutching Logan's axe gives him focus and he becomes the second Blood Angel after Mephiston to control the Rage. Donning the Black Armor of the Death Company, Dante and an elite cadre of Space Wolves and Blood Angels make best speed to Terra, only days ahead of the Chaos Crusade, now envigorated by their overwhelming victory.
Back on Terra, word reaches them of the defeat at the asteroid field and mass panic breaks out. The sheer psychic terror draws warp spawn to Terra and despite being put down as quickly as they spring up the damage is done. Humanity's will to fight is broken. As the humans on Terra prepare for the end, the Space Marines recieve their Wolf and Angel brothers from the Field battle and prepare for the end. Dante orders the Death Company freed and placed under him. They are all calm for the first time, for in Dante they see Sanguinius Reborn, and while they are saddened by his on-coming loss they are resolute to stand by their "primarch."
Another ship is allowed into the fleet unmolested, though it is scarred and battle-damaged all to hell and back. It is Leman Russ, and he has come to stand beside the remainder of his sons in the Wolftime. The presence of Leman Russ calms Humanity somewhat, but there is still tremendous fear here. At that moment Abaddon breaks into realspace and the assault begins. During a slight break in the firing, Ezekiel finds out Cypher has entered the Throneroom. Against Calgar's orders, Ezekiel and his Dark Angels break off and rush Terra to stop Cypher, though as always they refuse to say why.
Cypher has been meditating at the feet of the Emperor for hours, and now as if ordered to he rises and severs the Emperor from the Golden Throne. The very world shakes and at that moment the Emperor rises, healed of his injuries and ready to begin the Great Crusade to restore humanity as he did before.
... and at that point I'm not sure what happens...
