If you're buying boosters, be aware that a lot of the stuff that you're going to get is going to be for other clans - for instance, I bought seven boosters and took away approximately seven Scorpion characters, but have every other clan represented. (And a bunch of useful stuff too - events and what-not. It's hard to figure out what's good and what's not at this point in time.)
But this means that it might be easier to pool money and buy boosters together - that way, everybody gets what they want. Or, alternately, trade like a bastard, or buy the cards from the Internet. Or just buy a single box of boosters together and draft from that, or something.

Also, I've printed out and will drop off a copy of the rules at the club this afternoon.

I like the booster box buy idea, and the trading idea.
Let me find out what the legal block is, because it seems like Celestial, Death at Koten, and Path of the Destroyer are the three most legal sets.
I'll be picking up my Dragon starter tommorrow, and joining the Imperial Assembly soon after.

Further information about L5R that I've discovered:
- My Scorpion Magistrate deck would be greatly improved by the addition of Palace of Crimson Shadows, a Stronghold available only in the Scorpion Path of the Destroyer starter deck; I gotta see if I can get Kevin to get some of this in, or find another place that sells 'em. (Palace of Crimson Shadows allows you to bow a magistrate or courtier to dishonor a personality.)
- As I discussed with William this weekend, the 20/20 Holdings/Personality mix just doesn't work; it leads to having small, overfunded armies. I've switched over to about 15/25, which I haven't tested yet.
- Card draw is vital in this game. It's also probably not a good idea to burn all of your good cards on your first battle; if the other guy doesn't have enough beatdown to destroy a province, it's worth showing up, making him burn cards, then sending your guys home. On the other hand, if you don't show up and he does have enough cards to beat your province down, that's a holding that you just lost.
- I'm going to have to see if I can find a place to play L5R that doesn't shut down at six, as I work until five. There's always Starbucks, I suppose.

Will the new hours be every week, or only this week? And is he open Thanksgiving day?

I have to confirm it with Kevin, but as I recall starting this week he'll be open till 7:30 Wed-Saturday. It would give him extra business and make him more money; right now, he's essentially renting playspace in exchange for the stuff we buy. It's a smart move, although it gets him home later in the day. -Darren MacLennan

According to the L5R forum - and this is just from reading the first page - bowed weapons apparently _do_ contribute force. www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=77073--Clarification: Bowed cards still contribute to unit force, just not Army force. Weapons do not have their own force, due to the plus sign they actually modify the personality's force. In this way they still "add their force" to their unit even while bowed.-- -Darren

But when determining combat resolution you go off of Army Force.

But when determining combat resolution you go off of Army Force. In other words, if I have a 3 Force personality with a +2 Force item: - I have a Force of 5 for determining whether or not I'm killed by stuff like Ranged Attacks. - But I only contribute 3 when the time comes for combat resolution. Right? Also, it might be worth investing in a binder and some card holders for the communal stack of L5R cards; I organized my trades in a binder, and am very happy with the result. We should talk about it next time we see each other. -Darren MacLennan -Darren MacLennan

According to my guys on rpg.net, only bowed personalities and followers do not contribute force towards the battle resolution; weapons modify personalities. If the personality is bowed, then it contributes no force towards the final battle; if it is not bowed, then it does. forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?p=11294789&posted=1#post11294789So you can have your cake and eat it too. However, I'm hoping to find a place where it says this definitively. -Darren MacLennan
