THE STRATEGY:
Basic combos to look for:
1) Shintaro+Laughter of the Flames+Breath of the Heavens. Flame Token generation heaven. Shintaro enters play with +3F FIRE tokens. Then throw Laughter of the 1 or 3 +1F FIRE tokens depending if he's opposed or not. Now Breath generates a Ranged 3+(number of FIRE tokens) and then adds +1F FIRE token to him. None of these Strategies bow Shintaro thanks to his FIRE and TATTOOED keywords. Then his tokens contribute to combat resolution and make his Force too high to knock out with Ranged attacks. The best way to counter this is streight-forward: This combo takes 2 Battle actions to set up, giving you one battle action to kill/bow/sendhome Shintaro before a big personality dies.
2) Kiho+Pillars of Virtue+Tamori Wotan+Battle action. This one is a monster. Perform a Kiho, use the reaction from the stronghold for another Battle Action, use Wotan's action to swap a card from the top 4 of your Fate deck, and fire off another action. That's 3 actions where you dictate the flow plus find out what your next 4 fate cards are going to be. Most effective counter is (obviously) to kill Wotan before the first kiho resolves, but a less threatening combo can be done with Gato.
3) Temple to Shinsei/My Father's Shrine+Monk+Tower of Ningyo+Temple to Shinsei/My Father's Shrine. Honor ramp. Bow Temple/Shrine and a Monk (I generally use dishonored/poisoned personalities, but will usually use Taro for this work if one isn't available.) Then pay the one gold and bow Ningyo to streighten the Monk, who then bows with another Temple/Shrine. Corrupt Officials work well to stop this honor gain.
4) Master the Body+Pillars of Virtue+Steel on Steel. Everybody was kung-fu fighting! Master the Body on a decent Chi monk (like 3.) Win that fight, bow that loser, and go immediately to Steel on Steel (I use Gato as my personality for Steel on Steel cuz he's a duelist.) After you win that fight, destroy that loser.
WIN TACTICS
Military: Most of the monks in the deck are 6-8 range (as normal for most clan personalities.) Biggest "line" hitters are Gato, Shiori, and Shintaro. Let him hit you once, then come out swinging. Use combos 1 & 4 to brutal effect. Use Satsu's Open+Ningyo to keep your card draw high, as with Togashi's Guidance up hand size is not an issue.
Honor: Taro+Temple x3 and any spares+Shrine x3 will generate 9 honor in one turn. Use Gato, Shiori, Shintaro, Kazuki, and Satsu to run a defensive war while you run combo 3 for your honor gen, buy your personalities full honor when you can, and make any combat your opponent is considering costly for him.
Enlightenment:
Core Tactic - Use Satsu+Ningyo and Wotan to push the Ring you are looking for (or more than one) into your hand, then force a fight.
Desperation Tactic - Discard the Ring you are having problems scoring, then discard Togashi's Guidance to pull the Ring from the Discard to put it in play.
Fire: Combo 4.
Earth: Combo 1, 2, 4
Water: Combo 2+1 more will give it to you, but this is very easy to score with your stronghold.
Air: Resolve 3+ Spell or Kiho in one turn... *stares at the player*
Void: 4+ non-Kiho from Strategies. Combo 1 +two more non-Kiho. Its hard with this deck, but not impossible.
