As a time-honored tradition in the United States, every January the President stands before the governing officials of every state to recap the year that has gone by, to set expectations for the year to come, and to challenge leaders to rise to meet those expectations . This has been referred to primarily as the State of the Union address and since its inception in 1790 has never been cancelled, despite Reagan's postponement of the one that co-incided with the Challenger Disaster.
History lesson aside, as president of our group I want to catch you up on what we've done and where we're going.
We started back in March with a small handful of guys who loved playing Warhammer 40k and who hated what had become of the gaming side of Paper Heroes. In a few months we ramped up our efforts to include Warhammer Fantasy and later WARMACHINE and HORDES. Recently, we've added the L5R CCG to our line-up of supported games. Kevin has also expanded his gaming footprint and made sure we have plenty of tables. Not only has this benefitted us, but the Magic players are back in force again, which keeps the store "alive" while we aren't there. All-in-all, its truely been a growth year for gaming in Lake Charles.
I want to specificly thank Tom, Muzzy, and Greg for their dedication to the idea of the gaming club, especially in those situations where we've had to set individual taste aside to make sure we're addressing the interests of as much of our membership as possible.
But we learned things, too. We figured out how much is too much of a given game. We've learned the kinds of games our members want to play and the formats they like most. We figured out how to divide our team to make sure we deliver a consistent experience.
With 2010 comes new challenges, but we are already moving in place to face them in the best way possible. We started it in 2009, but from now on all Warhammer 40k events go through Muzzy, all Warhammer Fantasy events go through Tom, all L5R CCG events go through Greg, and I'm here for WM/H! as well as any additional things we take on (see below.)
Another undercurrent we've heard in 2009 was the lack of tabletop role-playing support in Lake Charles, which as of the 6th of January we are in the process of fixing. The League Binder now has places in it to advertise your Role-Playing group or to let people know you are looking for a game. In the next few months there will be support for RPG gamers, provided we see interest.
My goal is that by 2011 we see all the people who buy and never come in to play start hanging out with us. My goal is that when a new game comes in we aren't just trading players but are bringing in new people. My goal is to match people with the games they enjoy and can be competitive in, cuz who wants to play a game they stand no chance of winning? Its a big goal, to be sure, but with the talent we have in place its totally achievable.
Here's to an awesome 2009 and to an even better 2010!
