Are Hordes and Warmachine interchangeable? In other words, can you fight a Hordes vs. Warmachine battle?

Absolutely. The basic mechanics are identical and the only real difference is that WARMACHINE uses the Focus mechanic for magic/boosting whereas HORDES uses Fury, which accomplishes all the same things but is generated a different way and has some different uses.
To be more specific, Privateer Press designed HORDES to be able to play against WARMACHINE just as easily as they fight other HORDES, and vice versa. They also encourage those fights to happen.

Ah nice. I'll have to snag that copy of Hordes from Kevin.

If you want then on Wednesday I'll bring out my Cygnar and my Trollbloods. I was unlucky so Muzzy didn't see how brutal HORDES is compared to WARMACHINE, but the dice gods willing you'll see my Trolls in fighting form!

I would rather do Warmachine vs. Warmachine to start off, I've read the rules but I really need to play to understand it. My Cryx battleforce is assembled, although it isn't painted.

I'll have my Cygnar out on Wednesday and Muzzy should be bringing Khador. The rules will come to you in 2-3 games, provided you're able to compartmentalize and "block out" what you know about 40k/Fantasy. After that the only thing you'll have to learn to make the mental change from WARMACHINE to HORDES is Fury and that the warbeasts each have an Animus (essentially works like a spell.)
